STOP 5

RESTORATION: WEATHERFORD HOTEL

The histories and geographies of all places are shaped in part by certain influential individuals. John W. Weatherford was one of Flagstaff s own. Weatherford arrived in 1886 and purchased a couple of lots on Gold Avenue (now Leroux Street) with the money he earned from selling his horse and buggy (Mangum and Mangum 1993). He tried his luck at several businesses, namely the Parlor Saloon, a livery stable (from which horses and buggies could be rented), and the Gent’s Furnishing store. He built the south half of this building as a store in 1898 and added the north half of the building a year later, constructed with none other than Flagstaff s own locally quarried Moenkopi Sandstone.

He then converted the whole building into a hotel that opened for business on January 1, 1900 (Figure 27). With hot and cold running water, electric lights, and fine dining, this quickly became Flagstaff’s premier hotel, gaining a regional reputation across the Southwest. It competed heavily with the Commercial, Flagstaff’s first prominent hotel originally located directly across from the train station on Route 66. The Commercial burned down in 1975.
